Hurricane Helene, a force to be reckoned with, tore through the Southeastern United States, particularly the Appalachian Mountains from South Carolina through Western NC and the Virginias. The communities of Erwin, Del Rio, Newport, and many more here in East Tennessee, though faced with dramatic losses, have shown remarkable resilience. In Western North Carolina, towns like Hot Springs, Asheville, Swannanoa were severely damaged, nearly destroyed. Flood levels soared to record highs, dams were tested and held, and debris cascaded down rivers for miles. Entire highways and streets of homes have vanished. Area residents have lost homes, businesses, jobs, schools, churches, etc. The road to recovery from the devastation of the hurricane and its aftermath will be long, but the spirit of these communities remains unbroken.

Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief is a cooperative, volunteer ministry of the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board and its affiliated churches. It is totally dependent upon volunteers who give of their time, energy, talents and finances to assist others in a time of disaster. The ministry is led by the State Director, an employee of the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board. He and one administrative assistant are the only employees working primarily with Disaster Relief.
